Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is heavily concentrated in organs with high energy demands, such as the heart and liver. It acts as an obligate electron carrier in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Endogenous production peaks in a person's twenties and steadily declines. Furthermore, statin medications notoriously block the mevalonate pathway, depleting systemic CoQ10 levels, which is a primary driver of statin-induced muscle pain (myopathy).
