- Magnesium Hydroxide Suspension (e.g., Milk of Magnesia)
Magnesium hydroxide is poorly absorbed by the human intestinal tract. Instead of raising systemic magnesium levels for neurological benefits, it remains in the gut lumen where it exhibits a strong osmotic effect, drawing water into the intestines to induce peristalsis. It also chemically neutralizes gastric acid, functioning as a potent over-the-counter antacid.
